Steve recommends you write your first draft with the first words that come into your thinking. Then on the second draft, during editing you can do some alteration. But remember to use shorter words whenever possible, and be relevant.

Secondly, you can improve your writing and your figurative language by the prime rule: reading alot and writing alot.
